| “This is what the Lord says—your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea. Your descendants would have been like the sand, your children like the numberless grains; their name would never be cut off nor destroyed from before me.” Isaiah 48: 17-19 NIV
Teresa and I returned last week from spending time with our son Ben and his wife Elizabeth in Colorado Springs. We had a great time, in a very beautiful part of this country, but mainly it was just so wonderful to be with our son and his wife. One evening Ben reminded us of the times when he and our daughter Amy were little and they would wake us up because they had a bad dream. They would want to get into bed with us and we would let them. Being safely beside us caused them to forget whatever monster inhabited their dreams and they would fall fast asleep snuggled beside us. In their young minds, no monster could cross the threshold of our bedroom, and so they were safe.
As I reflected on this later, I wondered what it would be like to trust my heavenly Father like that. I doubt that it ever occurred to my children that I would reject them and deny them comfort in their fears and anxiety. I begin to wonder about what makes me so hesitant to completely trust in the goodness of my heavenly Father. At some point in the life of each of my children they learned that I was not completely trustworthy and that I was as vulnerable to life’s monster’s as they were and so began the process of self reliance that would enable them to become adults. Even though that is necessary, what about those monsters that life sends our way. Anxiety, fear, uncertainty, failure, betrayal, sickness, death and the list goes on. My children, when very young, somehow believed that I was bigger than the monsters in their lives and were able to trust me to give them rest.
In Isaiah 48, God was telling Israel what it would have been like if they had trusted and obeyed Him. They would have found Him to be the one who gave them blessing and peace. Instead, they wanted to do things their own way and all that God offered them was lost.
The offer is still open to us in Christ. Jesus promises in Matthew 11:48, that all who are weary and burdened can come to Him and He will give them rest. Recently, I have been really focusing on that promise. I have been asking God to bring me to the place that I trust in His goodness towards me and believe that I am safe in His loving arms, no matter what monsters pursue me. I don’t want to miss His blessings and all that He has for me, both now and in eternity and besides I can use the rest.

| Orchard Hills Groups
The small group model is an integral part of the life and body of the Church of the Holy Spirit-Orchard Hills. Our church has been founded upon the group model and has benefited from the intimacy and discipleship, which results from meeting together in a small group environment.
Groups are designed to create a safe and inviting environment for individuals to share common experiences and grow in relationship with Jesus Christ and each other through fellowship, Bible study and prayer. They are for adults of all ages, stages of life and spiritual maturity.
Two types of groups available at Orchard Hills:
Discipleship Groups—are small groups of 4 to 5 individuals of the same gender
Home groups—are comprised of 12 to 15 people who meet weekly in the home of one of the group members.
If you are interested in joining a group, please contact Mike Moffitt at (540) 977-6800 or mike@chsorchardhills.com.
